What is Tarwi?

(Andean Lupin Beans)

Tarwi is an ancestral superfood that has been used since the time of the Incas. It stands out for its high protein content, which can reach up to 60%, as well as its unique combination with a high fiber content, making it a truly exceptional food.

Naturally, tarwi contains an alkaloid that must be removed through a process known as “debittering.” Traditionally, this process was carried out in rivers, where the grain was left for several days to eliminate its bitterness.

At Sumaj Yapay, we have modernized this method through technology and specialized machinery, accelerating the debittering process while ensuring quality, consistency, and safety—allowing us to bring this superfood to the global market.
